# Small Beginnings...

In 2016, the idea to document SDL came to Karema while she was in the hospital with her dying husband. She wasn’t home to capture the kid’s SDL for the homeschool review. She wondered, could they use their phones to document learning? She met with a developer to create the LOL app, the initial version of GENIE app. The developer, a web 3 enthusiast, mentioned integrating LOL app with emerging technology called the blockchain, saying it could be used to create a distributed ledger for decentralized learning and how tokenomics could create a ROI for learning. Strangely, as Karema listened, she found herself crying; overwhelmed at the possibility she “stumbled upon!” LOL app failed to gain traction and NO ONE understood blockchain! She tabled the idea, until web 3 resurrected the possibility.
